Ear Wax Removal

Hearing is so easily taken for granted. It does so much for you, such as helping you enjoy a family day out, in understanding what is happening on your favourite programme and even when your oven timer is going off. Your hearing is so vital and yet we only think of our ear health when we come across a problem with it.

At County Hearing, we know just how important your hearing is to your everyday life. As a result of this, we’ve developed our Ear Health Assessment to understand your hearing better.

Ear Health Questionnaire

Firstly, we’ll have you fill out a medical questionnaire so we can understand as much as possible about your current ear health. This means that from the beginning of the assessment we’ll be aware of any challenges you’re currently facing

Ear Canal Inspection

With this information, we use the latest technology in video microscopes or microscope otoscopes to take a look down your ear and get the best view inside.

Ear Wax Removal

If you do have any ear wax, we’ll be able to remove it safely using microsuction

Middle Ear Pressure Tests

We also carry out a pressure test, this will check your drum and middle ear to see how healthy they are and how well they’re doing their job

Hearing Screening

We then carry out a hearing screening test to check for signs of hearing loss. We are able to refer you to a medical professional if necessary and discuss hearing technology if needed.

For Microsuction services outside of Essex, you can search a national database of independent practitioners from this link.

FAQ

How do I know if earwax is causing me a problem?

If you’re unsure whether you’ve got earwax, it’s best to check with a practise nurse.

Is ear microsuction painful?

Microsuction is a quick and comfortable procedure, it can be a bit noisy and if your ear wax is hard it can cause some discomfort. We recommend using earwax drops in advance of your appointment to avoid this. Our practitioner will, of course, take it at your pace

How regularly should I have microsuction?

There is no set rule for how often someone should have microsuction. It depends on your specific circumstances! Some of our patients have the treatment regularly, but others only require treatment every 1 or 2 years.

After you have your first microsuction treatment, we’ll send you yearly reminders, just in case you’re having any problems. Remember, though, that you can book a consultation at any time by giving us a call or using our booking form!

What happens if I need a specialist referral?

For complex cases, we can refer you to Dr Mihaela Carmaciu in Chelmsford, a practising GP with a Diploma in Laryngology and Otology from the royal college of surgeons. You can also see your GP for a private referral to our local ENT consultants at the Oaks Hospital in Colchester.

Can earwax affect my hearing aid?

Yes, it is possible for earwax to get inside your device and affect its performance. We reccomend you replace the devices filters regularly, they can be purchased from us and easily fitted yourself. If you are unsure, please feel free to ask for advice.

Are there any people who shouldn’t undergo microsuction?

Unfortunately, there are some people who are unable to undergo microsuction. Any patients that take Warfarin (blood thinners), have a presence of certain infections, or are currently suffering from a perforation of the eardrum should avoid microsuction as it can cause complications.

We always advise children under the age of 16 to not undergo microsuction. If you’re worried about your child’s ears, bring them in for a consultation and we can suggest an alternative treatment for them.

Finally, if, following a consultation, we are concerned about the severity of your condition, we may refer you to an ear, nose, and throat (ENT) consultant. In extreme circumstances, their medical knowledge and experience will be better placed to treat you.

If you’re unsure about whether or not you should have microsuction, contact us for more information.
